BODi Review: Why Is BODi a Game-Changer for Workouts?

BODi, previously known as Beachbody, is an all-in-one digital streaming platform featuring workout programs, eating plans, and mindset content designed to build your Health Esteem, which is the foundation of the BODi philosophy.

OVERVIEW

In an effort to be more inclusive and less focused on weight loss, Beachbody On Demand (BOD) and BODi merged to become one platform. This rebranding enabled the company to design BODi as its “Health Esteem” destination, with a focus on accepting and embracing the person you are today and championing who you wish to become.

The BODi app offers cardio/HIIT, cycling, barre, core, strength, bootcamp, yoga, Pilates, and meditation, in addition to nutrition and mindfulness content.

You can take live classes led by Beachbody's trainers or choose from the library of on-demand workouts, which are available at any time.

BODi also includes eating plans and a variety of mindset content to help you stay motivated and on track. This content includes videos, articles, and podcasts that will help you develop a positive mindset and overcome any challenges that come your way.

You can download BODi on any iOS or Android-supported mobile device, as well as with Apple TV devices, Chromecast devices, Fire TV devices, Roku devices, and certain software and browsers for computers and laptops. The app is available from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

BODi is pricey, especially compared to other fitness apps like Peloton and iFIT. They offer a 14-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee, so it may be worth trying before paying for one of the subscriptions. Plus, some workouts use equipment, such as dumbbells, resistance bands, or a yoga mat, which may be an additional expense.

The three BODi app membership types include:

  • 12-month membership for $179
  • 6-month membership for $119
  • 3-month membership for $89

Each membership is set for automatic renewal unless you cancel before your credit card is charged, so make sure to note your first day after the free 14-day trial.

BODi

Holistic Health and Fitness Resources

The BODi app has an overwhelming amount of fitness, nutrition, and mindset content, plus thousands of live and on-demand classes. And while this comprehensive platform is a solid workout tool, it’s not for everyone.

    BODi App Standout Features

BODi is a popular online wellness platform featuring fitness, nutrition, and mindset content combined with community and expert support to help you build sustainable habits and achieve your health goals. While not an exhaustive list, here are some of our favorite standout features of the BODi app.

    Workouts and Live Classes

The workout program, live classes, and fitness section of the BODi app is by far the most extensive and useful part of the program.

In addition to thousands of world-class workouts, including cardio, HIIT, cycling, barre, core, strength, bootcamp, yoga, Pilates, and meditation,

BODi also has a structured program called BODi fitness Blocks (more on this later). You can search workout programs by categories such as most popular, under 30 minutes, no equipment required, beginners, weight loss, lean and sculpted, dance, low-impact, and more.

One perk of BODi is they offer both live classes and on-demand workouts. The live class schedule changes daily with one workout every hour, giving you plenty of variety and workout options.

The live schedule includes classes in the following categories:

    • Cycling
    • Strength
    • Cardio
    • Bootcamp
    • Pilates
    • Barre
    • Core
    • Yoga
    • Meditation
    • Dance

You can filter by class or choose the date you want to do a class, and it will display the time, class type, instructor, and duration.

    BODi Blocks

BODi Fitness Blocks are structured programs designed to help you stay motivated and on track. Each block lasts three weeks and includes five workouts per week.

The fourth week, also called the UP or Unconditional Progress week, is optional and focuses on rest and functional recovery before starting a new BODi Block.

You can also use this week to try one of the Mindset Master Classes. Since a new BODi Block drops every month, you can choose the program that best matches your goals.

    The BODi Block categories include:

    • All-Bodi Block: Innovative strength training, cardio, core, and mobility work.
    • Bike Block: High-energy mix of cycling and strength training.
    • Beginners Only Block: Low-impact workouts for beginners.
    • Iron Block: Traditional weight lifting focusing on building lean mass and muscle definition.
    • Super Block: Workouts with Super Trainers as they remake hit programs.

Special Program Categories and Beachbody Instructors

The BODi app is packed with several special programs like kickboxing, MMA, mobility and recovery, low impact, pre/post natal, kids and family. It also features classes by popular instructors such as Amoila Cesar, Andrea Rogers, Autumn Calabrese, Chalene Johnson, Chris Downing, Elise Joan, Idalis Velazquez, Ilana Muhlstein, Jennifer Jacobs, Jericho McMatthews, Joel Freeman, Megan Davies, Sagi Kalev, Shaun T, and Tony Horton.

    Class Modifications

Being able to modify a class based on experience and fitness level is critical when choosing a workout app, and BODi does an excellent job with this feature.

That’s because most classes and workouts have more than one trainer demonstrating different levels, such as how to make the workout low-impact, allowing you to modify the routine based on your fitness level, ability, and health.

    BODi Eating Plans

BODi offers five different eating plans: 2B Mindset, 2B Mindset Superblock, Portion Fix, 2B Pregnant, and the 4 Week Gut Protocol. You can take a short quiz to figure out which one is right for you or simply select the program you like and get started. Be prepared to receive information about supplements such as Shakeology, vitamins, and meal replacement bars. The good news is you can skip over the nutrition products and still participate in the eating plans without purchasing additional products.

    2B Mindset

The 2B Mindset Eating Plan is designed to help you achieve a healthy relationship with food and make reaching your goals a positive experience. It offers a step-by-step, concrete solution on how to lose weight and keep it off. You can expect to learn how to recognize false hunger, what to eat first, how to develop a daily habit, how to deal with cravings, and meals that you can eat in big portions and still stay in weight loss mode.

    2B Mindset Super Block

The BODi 2B Mindset Super Block takes the fundamentals of the 2B Mindset eating plan and extends it into a four-week timeline to support health and weight loss. The difference between the 2B Mindset plans is the Super Block gives you a daily dose of the 2B Mindset. Every day you’ll get a 5 to 10-minute video with coaching along the way.

    Portion Fix

The Portion Fix Eating Plan helps give you control of your food without counting calories or feeling deprived. This plan is completely customizable for the way you like to eat and provides a specific game plan so you can get the results you want. The color-coded containers help you with portion sizes and make sure you’re eating well-balanced meals, making it an easy way to take control of your nutrition without feeling like you’re on a diet. You can also customize your program by choosing one of the following plans: Foundational Fix, Timed Nutrition, Intermittent Fasting, or Carb Cycling. Plus, it comes with six quick videos that help you get started with the program.

    2B Pregnant

Created by a registered dietitian nutritionist, the 2B Pregnant eating plan is BODi’s first program that simplifies nutrition for pregnancy. You’ll get 16 short videos covering trimester-specific advice about healthy nutrition for you and your growing baby, including key nutrients, strategies to manage nausea, how to create satisfying meals for each trimester, and more. Plus, 2B comes with tools for every trimester, such as food lists, recipes, and trackers you can use throughout your pregnancy.

    4 Week Gut Protocol

This comprehensive nutrition program teaches you how your gut health is impacted by the foods you eat. More specifically, you’ll learn how to eat to support a healthy gut and rebalance your gut microbiome. This program was designed with BODI’s nutritionists and PhDs to ensure it meets nutritional standards. Although this protocol promotes supplements, you don’t have to purchase any to do the program.

FIXATE Episodes on Nutrition and Recipes

Both eating plans include several recipes and the FIXATE cooking show that teaches you how to shop, prep, and make healthy meals for various nutrition needs, such as gluten-free, Paleo-friendly, vegan, and more. Weekly cooking episodes feature Autumn Calabrese and her professional chef brother, Bobby Calabrese.

    Mindset Content

Each month BODi releases informative and inspirational mindset masterclasses and tools featuring diverse topics ranging from the science of living a happier life to managing stress, building resilience, improving willpower, and elevating self-esteem and confidence.

July’s topic is The Perfection Detox, which covers a workout plan for the mind that will help tame your inner critic, strengthen the courage muscle, and release joy.

Classes are taught by experts in the field, including best-selling authors, psychologists, and self-help leaders. The mindset classes and workshops are a nice feature of BODi, and definitely, one that we feel sets it apart from the competitors.

The mindset content on the BODi app is constantly evolving, with the company looking for ways to improve the user experience. Recently, BODi partnered with Brendon Burchard, a high-performance coach, bestselling author, and CEO and founder of Growthday, personal development app for achieving your full potential. Through this partnership, BODi offers Monday Fire videos, 3-day challenges, and monthly master classes. You can also sign up for a more comprehensive membership to Growthday, which includes a 15 percent discount for BODi members.

    BODi Bike

BODi might be best known for fitness, nutrition, and mindset content, but they’re also making a mark on the exercise equipment front. The BODi Bike is a total fitness solution from MYX Fitness. This stationary workout bike comes equipped with an interactive 21.5-inch swivel touchscreen tablet, a one-year warranty, 30-day home trial, and compatibility with the BODi app.

You can get the BODi bike in a natural white or deep charcoal finish, plus it comes with a heart rate monitor to use while working out. The sticker price of $1,399 includes delivery and setup.

If you don’t mind spending more upfront, consider the BODi Bike Studio package. For $1,625, you’ll get the BODi Bike, a 10-piece dumbbell set with weights ranging from 3 to 15 pounds, one kettlebell, exercise mat, Polar wireless heart rate monitor, and a three-year BODi membership for five people.

If you’re in the market for something simple and more affordable, BODi offers a basic MYX Fitness stationary bike for $499. But make sure to do some comparison shopping, because this model does not have a touchscreen with connected fitness capabilities.

One thing to note about this bike is it uses friction resistance, which means it has brake pads similar to a real bike. As you increase the resistance, the brakes come into direct contact with the flywheel. This can have a different feel than bikes with magnetic resistance, such as the Peloton Bike or Echelon Connect. Friction resistance also leads to wear and tear on the brake pads, which could require replacement parts.

    Community and Support

The BODi app has a built-in community forum where you can connect with other BODi members. This is a great place to get support and motivation from others who are on the same journey as you.

You also have the option to connect with a Coach for support, motivation, and personalized recommendations, or you can request an accountability partner, which BODi will assign to you. Because the BODi app is designed to keep you motivated, you'll get daily challenges, encouragement from your trainers, and support from the community.

    What Does BODi Track?

BODi has a tracking tool that allows you to log various health, fitness, and nutrition metrics. When you click on the tracking icon, you’ll go to a screen that displays daily activity or your progress.

The daily activity screen shows a week at a glance calendar on top with the details of the specific day. In this tool, you can log workouts, meal plan info (based on the meal plan you chose), Shakeology (if you are using the BeachBody Shakeology products), water, scale weight, measurements, notes, and progress photos.

When you click on the “My Progress” icon, you can see a weekly average and total of workouts, Shakeology, weight, and progress photos. While the tracking tools are helpful, they are not as extensive as some other fitness apps. Plus, the nutrition section is very specific to the BODi food plans, so they may not be useful if you’re following a different eating style.

    Is BODi Easy to Use?

Once you’re familiar with the BODi app, it is fairly easy to use. That said, it does take some time to learn how to navigate the platform, so plan on spending a few days just scrolling through the app and various programs.

You’ll also want to dedicate some time to reading about the eating plans if you plan on following one of the programs. They are a bit complex, so our recommendation is that you take notes on both plans and then decide which one makes the most sense for your lifestyle and goals.

Like other fitness apps, you can download any workout video to your device so you can workout if you’re offline. This is a nice feature for anyone who travels or does not have access to an internet connection when exercising.

    Who is BODi Best For?

The BODi app is best for anyone wanting a comprehensive fitness platform that features a variety of wellbeing programs, live and on-demand classes, eating plans, and mindset content. We feel that all fitness levels can benefit from the BODi app, however, you should be comfortable working out at home without any feedback from instructors. So, if you want hands-on instruction or like the added benefit of having a trainer with you while exercising, you may want to opt for a gym membership instead.

Since BODi classes cover a wide range of fitness methods, it’s a great tool for anyone wanting cardio, strength training, flexibility, and other specialty workouts like Pilates, yoga, and boxing. We also think BODi is a worthwhile app if you’re looking for nutrition content and eating plans in addition to fitness classes and workout programs. Plus, we really like the Mindset Master Classes from top experts that focus on motivation, self-esteem, and personal development.

One thing to mention is the heavy marketing angle that BODi takes. It is better since rebranding, but you will still see advertisements and material encouraging you to buy extra workout packages, supplements, and branded products. Just know that none of the extra products are necessary or required to use the BODi app.

That said, some people (like myself) may find the marketing push annoying and consider it a downside of the app. And while the company is moving towards a more holistic approach to fitness, we think the verdict is still out on the direction they will go, and therefore, caution against using this app if you do not want any material or products focused on weight loss.

What to Consider When Choosing a Fitness App

Whether you go with BODi or decide to look for a different fitness app, knowing what to consider when researching the various platforms can save you time and help you find the right app for your needs. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing a fitness app.

    Cost

Knowing your budget before you start researching workout apps can save you time and help you choose the right platform for your needs. Some apps offer free versions with limited features, while others require a monthly, quarterly, or annual fee.

In general, fitness apps cost between $12.99 and $29.99 per month.

    Free Trial and Money-Back Guarantee

Many fitness apps offer free trials and money-back guarantees. This is a great way to test out the app and see if it's a good fit for you before you commit to paying for it.

On average, most free trials last seven to 14 days, with some going as long as 30 days. While not as common as a free trial, some platforms, like BODi, feature a money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied with the service. BODi offers users a 30-day money-back guarantee.

    App Type

Workout apps are generally divided into two categories: class-based or routine-based. Class-based platforms feature live and/or on-demand classes led by expert instructors.

They may also include more comprehensive programs or blocks that consist of several workouts built around a specific theme such as training for a half marathon or building muscle.

Routine-based apps, on the other hand, allow you to choose workouts based on exercises, sets, reps, and recommended weights. Ideally, both app types will offer a wide range of fitness programs, including cardio, strength training, yoga, stretching, and others.

    Nutrition and Meal Planning

Some fitness apps, like BODi, also include nutrition and meal planning features. If you’re interested in managing your diet alongside your workouts, consider platforms that provide meal suggestions, nutritional information, or allow you to log your food intake.

    Tracking Tools

Beyond workout classes and fitness programs, many apps include features to track and monitor your progress.

Look for options to record workouts, track metrics like distance or reps, monitor improvements over time, and set goals. Progress tracking helps you stay motivated and allows you to assess your fitness journey.

    User Reviews

Before you download a fitness app, take some time to read reviews (both positive and negative) from other users. This can give you insights into the app's usability, effectiveness, and overall user satisfaction.

Also, check out the number of starts the platform has received. Make sure to read reviews from sites not affiliated with the app.

    Ease of Use

A complicated interface and design can be frustrating to use. It may also decrease the likelihood that you will take advantage of all the app has to offer. Before paying for a subscription, make sure the platform has a clean design, clear instructions, and is easy to navigate.

    Supportive Community

If being able to connect with other users on the app and through private online groups and forums is a must-have for you, then consider a platform that offers a supportive community component.

Interacting with other members can help with motivation and accountability. It also provides encouragement and a sense of belonging.

    Compatibility

Fitness apps work through an electronic device such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Most are compatible with iOS and Android. Some also integrate with other devices, like an Apple Watch.

    Bottom Line

Overall, BODi is a great choice if you’re looking for a platform that offers structured programs and routines, like the Blocks, and live workout classes with a rotating daily schedule.

We also appreciate the nutrition and mindset content, which makes the experience more holistic.

Because BODi requires a three-month minimum commitment, it is a costly upfront investment.

However, Beachbody offers a free 14-day trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can always opt out before the free trial ends and not pay anything.

And finally, if you have any health concerns or chronic medical conditions, make sure to talk to your doctor before starting a new fitness program. They can help you choose an app that is safe and effective for you.
