Thoughts from Our Experience with the Fitbod App
Our experience with the Fitbod app was very positive. It only took about 10 minutes to get through the initial set-up, which included questions like:
- Experience with lighting weights: Beginner, intermediate, or advanced?
- Main reason for joining the app? Possible answers include: increase muscle mass and size, get stronger and lift more weight, tone muscle and lose weight, do HIIT style interval training, or do workouts with no gym equipment.
- Where do you exercise: Large gym, small gym, garage gym, at home, bodyweight only, or custom?
- What equipment do you have? Lists all possible equipment in a gym, such as dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, and barbells. All options are selected, and you go through and uncheck the ones you don’t have or don’t want to use.
- How often do you want to work out?
- On the days you work out, do you want a preview of your workout?
- The last time you exercised, which muscle groups did you work out? This is optional, but it can help Fitbod build your first workout and analyze your recent muscle usage.
Once you complete the questions, you can add body stats, which we recommend since it helps Fitbod personalize your experience. You’ll then see a screen with a suggested workout plan that lists fitness level, workout goal, equipment, and fitness goal. This is all based on answers to the questions.
My first workout was a full-body routine with nine resistance-based exercises requiring dumbbells and a barbell. The top of the screen shows the target muscles and the percentage of each muscle group that will be used. You then see each exercise in a list with the name, number or sets, reps, and weight.
Some workouts take you through a straight set, completing each exercise before moving to the next, while others incorporate training strategies like supersets. You can click on each exercise to see the expert demonstrated video, working sets, explanation of reps, and weight. Exercise instructions include video and written steps. The target tab shows you which muscles you’ll use, and the equipment tab lists the equipment needed to perform the move.
Other features include the replace tab that allows you to choose a replacement or alternative move. FitBod also has a log feature that keeps track of all your past workouts. It uses this information to create your next workout by analyzing this workout data,
If you want to create your own workout, click on the “create new” tab. This gives you options like:
- Splits: Gives you sample workouts that focus on one of these specific training styles — push, pull, upper body only, lower body only, 15-minute core.
- Bodyweight only workouts: 30-minute full-body or 15-minute HIIT intervals.
- Dumbbell workouts: 30-minute full-body or 15-minute HIIT intervals.
- Equipment specific workouts: kettlebells, resistance bands, BOSU, or TRX.
If you change the settings to “Bodyweight Only,” you’ll only get recommended exercises that do not require any additional equipment or weight to perform. This changed my nine equipment-based exercises to bodyweight-only moves that I can perform anywhere, including:

- Downward dog push-up

It even assigns each muscle group a percentage based on how much they are recruited during the movement. Moreover, the app has a recovery tab page with a visual representation of the muscles that have had adequate rest from previous workouts.
The Fitbod app uses written exercise instructions and expert-led video demonstrations to show users how to perform a move. By tackling both learning styles, this app does an excellent job of ensuring users will understand how to execute an exercise.
This feature allows you to track personal records and workout streaks over time. More specifically, it tracks the reps you complete each workout and displays the information on a graph so you can see how you’re progressing. For example, while performing a move, you can see your rep record, previous reps with dates, and your current number of reps.
When the Fitbod algorithm detects that your workouts are getting easy, it will change certain variables like sets, reps, or exercise type to keep pushing you towards your fitness goals. Conversely, if the workouts are too difficult, the app will make adjustments to match the routines to your current ability.

It also requires self-direction and problem-solving if a move is not working.
