iFIT

Best for connected exercise machines

  • Instructor-led studio classes
  • Instructor-led audio workouts
  • 140+ workout series

The easiest way to use the app is with iFIT-connected exercise equipment. iFIT is available on NordicTrack, ProForm, Freemotion, Weider, and Matrix exercise equipment. Connected machines and Bluetooth-enabled equipment include treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, rowers, fitness mirrors, and home gyms.

iFIT workouts and classes are designed with and without equipment. However, to take full advantage of the app, most people use it as part of an overall routine that includes cardio machines like a bike, treadmill, or rower, and resistance equipment such as dumbbells, kettlebells, and exercise bands.

The iFIT app has several categories of fitness and wellness content including:

  • Global workouts
  • Studio classes
  • Live events
  • Progressive series
  • Challenges
  • iFT Mind
  • Google Maps
  • Cooking classes

Classes are available individually or as part of a program, such as the Foundations of Running: Increase Your Speed Endurance, a 12-workout series. You can search by workout type, then by class. For example, if you choose running, you’ll see workouts divided by series, recovery, tempo, weight loss, intervals, hills, endurance, and race. The strength category features classes workouts by series, total body, upper body, lower body, and abs.

Additionally, you can filter classes and programs by duration, trainer, intensity, area of the body you want to target, workout location, equipment, completed classes, language, and more. And if you’re short on time, we really like that you can sort by newest, top rated, trending, easiest, hardest, shortest, and longest.

The iFIT app costs $15 per month and comes with a 30-day trial. You can use the app with iOS and Android-compatible mobile devices. It also works with Roku devices, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, and Android TV. The iFIT app is available for download on the iFIT website, Apple App Store, Google Play, or Amazon App Store. Your iFIT subscription is good for one user, but you can log in to the app on as many pieces of equipment as you’d like.

After downloading the app, you’ll create an account and agree to the subscription terms. Remember, there is a 30-day free trial, so make sure to look for this when signing up. That said, you’ll need to provide credit card information to take advantage of the trial. But you can cancel before the 30 days and not be charged. The next steps take about five minutes and include questions like:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Workout goals (lose weight, improve muscle tone, improve performance, improve health and wellness, maintain current fitness)
  • Days you prefer to work out
  • Activity level on a typical day
  • How long do you like to work out
  • Which fitness gear do you like to use

Once you complete this process, you’ll have access to all programming, including on-demand studio classes, outdoor classes, global workouts, mindfulness content, cooking tips, and more.

Meditation and sleep are key components of an overall fitness and wellness routine. That’s why we really like this iFIT series which guides you through the essential practices of meditation. You’ll also find sessions designed to help you slow down before bed and peacefully transition into healing rest.

What Does iFIT Track?

iFIT is more than just a platform to take classes and participate in live races and events, it’s also a place to track and store valuable fitness data like completed workouts and various metrics. Your iFIT dashboard is personalized to you, meaning you get to customize what you see when you log in. The dashboard gives you access to metrics and stats under the following categories:

  • Activity: This section automatically syncs your stats from completed workouts done on an iFIT-enabled machine or manual workouts you’ve logged through the app. This screen displays metrics like time, distance, elevation, average duration, average speed, average incline, steps, average pace, passive burn, workout burn, and total calories burned.
  • Nutrition: If you log food items, you’ll see detailed nutrition information like calories consumed, calories burned, and net calories.
  • Sleep: You can manually log sleep data into your iFIT app account.
  • Goals: This tool allows you to set and track goals. The dashboard will help you stay on track by telling you how close you are to achieving them.

You’ll also see a Milestones tab with the year next to it. Milestones are the total year-to-date count of completed iFIT workouts. The is also a Trophy Case icon that stores information about completed challenges and live events. This is a great motivational tool to help you see how close you are to meeting your goals.

Is iFIT Easy to Use?

Overall, iFIT is fairly easy to use. Downloading and getting started with the app is quick and takes less than 10 minutes. The app itself is intuitive and easy to navigate. We were able to explore the app, preview a few classes, and set up the dashboard in less than 30 minutes. If you’re familiar with workout apps, the iFIT app shouldn't take long to learn.

The on-demand classes, live events, and training series vary in difficulty from beginner to advanced. And you have several ways to filter workouts and classes including by type, series, duration, intensity, instructor, indoor, outdoor and even by terrain like beaches, forests, mountains, and waterfront. iFIT also features classes that match your preferences on your home screen. Who Is iFIT Best For?

The iFIT app is best for people who want a studio or group fitness experience while using a cardio machine such as a treadmill, rower, or bike. It’s also ideal for fitness enthusiasts looking for indoor workouts that mimic outdoor training. We also think it’s a great platform for anyone wanting extra motivation and education from the world-class iFIT instructors.

However, if you’re looking for an app that allows you to customize routines with an exercise library, you may want to give another platform a try. That’s because the iFIT app is geared towards coach-led workouts and classes.

Additionally, since one of the main features is to integrate with iFIT-enabled machines like NordicTrack and Proform, it may not be the best choice if you don’t have access to this equipment. That said, it does pair nicely with mobile devices, allowing you to use the app with your own exercise machines or off-equipment workouts.

How Does iFIT Compare to Other Apps?

Workout apps typically come in two forms: Class-based and routine only. If you’ve tried other class-based platforms, you might notice iFIT has more features for connected machines from NordicTrack, ProForm, Freemotion, Weider, and Matrix. That said, it still offers plenty of benefits for people with other workout machines or equipment. Below, we compared iFIT to four other apps to see how it stacked up.

What to Consider When Choosing a Fitness App

Finding the right fitness app requires a bit of trial and error to see how it works and if it will meet your needs. And whether you start and stick with the iFIT app, or you decide to try another platform, having a framework to use when comparing apps can make the decision-making process a lot smoother. Here are some things to consider when choosing a fitness app.

  • App type: The first thing you need to consider is the type of fitness app. For example, do you want a class-based app like iFIT and Peloton that offers users instructor-led programming, or do you want a routine-based platform like Fitbod that provides workouts and exercise libraries.
  • Monthly fee: Some workout apps are free, but most class-based platforms range from $12.99 to $29.99 per month. Many apps offer discounts if you pay per quarter, semi-annually, or annually.
  • Trial period: Several workout apps come with a trial period ranging from seven to 30 days, with 14 days being the average. Some platforms have a free and fee-based version instead of a trial period. This allows you to try the free version first to see if you want to pay for the upgrades.
  • Fitness level: Workout apps with instructor-led classes are appropriate for all levels. They also provide more direct instruction, which is helpful for beginners. Routine-based apps are also designed for all levels, but people new to working out may need a platform that offers video, audio, and written exercise descriptions.
  • Equipment: Look for routine-based and class-based fitness apps that offer both bodyweight-only workouts and routines with equipment. This gives you the flexibility to choose different routines for home and the gym.
  • Expert instructors: Workout apps with live and on-demand classes are known for expert instructors and coaches. If possible, look for a platform with a variety of instructors that use different music genres, coaching techniques, and motivational cues.
  • Live and on-demand classes: Some class-based apps have both live and on-demand classes, while others use a library of saved classes and workouts. If you like having a schedule and committing to a workout at a specific time, look for a platform with live classes.
  • Exercise descriptions: Video tutorials, audio instructions, and written steps are all valuable when learning how to perform an exercise. If possible, view a couple of videos to see if the quality is good, the demonstrations match the written instructions, and you can follow along with the demonstrator.
  • Different fitness modalities: Some workout and class-based apps focus on one area, while others offer a bit of everything. If you want a platform that does it all, then consider a workout app with cycling, treadmill, rowing, HIIT, boot camp, strength training, yoga, Pilates, stretching, and other activities.
  • Compatible platforms and devices: Check to make sure your device is compatible with the platform. Many workout apps are available for iOS and Android devices, and some even allow you to link other health apps to the platform. Also, check the compatibility between any wearable devices like a smartwatch or fitness tracker. Some apps integrate your streaming device with a wearable one.

The Bottom Line

The iFIT app is an interactive fitness platform designed for home, gym, and on-the-go cardio, strength, yoga, and flexibility workouts. Overall, we think it’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to add variety to a fitness routine with trainer-led classes and programs.

We also like the motivation, support from coaches, live events, special programming, and global workouts you can do all from the comfort of your home or gym. And it’s easy to get started. All you need to access the app is an iOS or Android-supported mobile device or a compatible TV. Plus, you can try it for 30 days, so you have nothing to lose.
