Future App Overview

Future (30-day risk free trial) is an app-based workout platform that pairs users with an expert coach to build customized fitness routines with audio coaching, monitor progress, provide daily motivation, and make adjustments as needed.

Future is built around your schedule, access to exercise equipment, and fitness goals. We also like that you can communicate with your coach via Facetime, chat, messages, and other methods for a real-life experience.

Future relies heavily on technology to deliver information, connect users with coaches, and provide motivation. More specifically, the platform uses the Apple Watch and iPhone or an Android-based device to deliver insights about biometrics, personalized training recommendations, and a direct line to chat with coaches.

This tech connection allows coaches to message with daily check-ins and provide tips and feedback before and after workouts.

Until recently, Future App was only available for iOS. But the company now has an Android-compatible version. You can get Future for Android on the Google Play Store and for iOS on the App store.

While the company has expanded its network to include both iOS and Android users, it is not available to residents outside of the United States.

You can download the Future app from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or the website. After downloading, you’ll provide demographic details along with fitness and health information, including exercise needs and preferences.

This is also the time to give insight into the type of coach you want so Future can help match you with compatible trainers.

Future has an online questionnaire that allows you to pick a coach. You can use the suggested coach list to find a trainer or choose a different coach from the online roster.

  1. Speaking of coaches, Future has top-certified coaches with extensive backgrounds in exercise science, health, sports and conditioning, collegiate athletics, group exercise instruction, and more.

Once you select a coach, you will set a time to meet via FaceTime to establish goals, preferences, and a schedule. Then, each week, you’ll receive a personalized workout from your coach, with the ability to message or call your coach throughout the week.

Future’s Head of Performance, Renee Zernicke says having a personal connection with her clients through text on the app is really fun for both parties to stay engaged through the relationship. She also really likes how the app allows people to exercise whenever and wherever they are, even if they don’t have access to a gym or exercise equipment. “Our users are very mobile savvy and travel quite a bit, so having a workout plan in your pocket, on your phone is a real advantage that in-person coaching can’t replicate,” she adds.

The workouts, instructions, and video demonstrations are sent to your phone and Apple Watch if you have one.

Your personalized workouts come with video demonstrations and instructions, but you can always ask your coach for clarification on how to do a move. Plus, Future features a tool that allows you to record yourself while working out, so you can get feedback on how you’re performing exercises.

And you can score a routine after completing it. This allows your coach to make adjustments for your next round of workouts. Periodic FaceTime calls and more in-depth check-ins take place about every three to four weeks.

The Future app is a costly undertaking. A subscription to this premium coaching platform will cost you $199 per month. That said, they do offer a generous guarantee that states, “try it and love it, or your first month is on us,” so Future does stand behind its product.

The only problem with this policy is you still need to pay for the first month upfront and then request a refund. This is different from other fitness apps that offer a free trial with no charges to your credit card unless you fail to cancel your account before the trial period ends.

Beyond the first month, Future allows users to cancel anytime. Additionally, full app capabilities are best achieved with an Apple Watch Series 3 or newer, which is an added expense if you do not own one. However, Future offers a rental program that allows users to lease an Apple Watch while paying for a subscription.

Future App Standout Features

Future is a comprehensive personal training app focusing on customized workouts, regular communication with an expert coach, flexible scheduling, and ongoing support and motivation.

Within the platform, you’ll have access to your fitness routines, past workouts, progress, exercise videos, detailed instructions, messaging tools, and more. Here are some other standout features you can expect with the Future app.

Apple Watch Rental Program

The Future app works seamlessly with an Apple Watch. Coaches encourage clients to use an Apple Watch during workouts and to track other metrics. Because it is a significant part of the program, Future offers a rental option for people who do not own an Apple Watch.

Record Mode

Working real-time with a personal trainer is the gold standard, but when that is not possible, being able to send feedback to your coach is the next best thing. The record feature with Future allows you to take a video while performing an exercise and then send it to your coach for feedback on form, posture, and movement execution.

Choose and Change Coaches

Future is built around a coaching model, so it comes as no surprise that the company has a smooth matching process. The brief yet informative questionnaire allows users to share helpful details with Future to ensure a good fit with a trainer.

Beyond the matching tool, Future features a robust roster, allowing you to filter, read, and find your own coach. They also support changing coaches if you find the one you start with is not the right fit.

Messaging with Your Trainer

Another cornerstone of Future is the ability to message with your coach. Because your coach is a real person, they are on-call to support you from start to finish. This includes an initial FaceTime meeting to establish goals, priorities, and a schedule.

After the first contact, your coach will message you often and respond in real time via the Future app if you have questions or need changes to your plan. You’ll also receive video messages from your coach regularly, and you can schedule FaceTime check-in calls from time to time.

Travel Accommodations

If you travel frequently, the Future app makes it easy to add your travel dates, so your coach can tailor your workouts to match your travel needs. What’s more, if you’re staying in a hotel, you can work with your coach to build a routine based on the available equipment.

Membership On Hold

You can pause your membership for one, two, or three months and reserve a spot with your coach without being charged until you return.

What Does Future Track?

The Future app keeps track of your workout routines, sets, reps, weights, and other metrics. This data is used by both you and your coach to make adjustments to your program, monitor progress, and celebrate success.

Is Future Easy To Use?

Yes, Future is relatively easy to use. Downloading and getting started takes about 15 minutes. If you do the “choose a coach” questionnaire, plan for an additional five to 10 minutes.

Because you’ll want to spend some time reading bios and sorting through the extensive coach roster, the longest part of the onboarding process might be selecting your coach.

Beyond the initial process, the app itself is intuitive and easy to navigate. If you have an Apple Watch, Future is even easier to access and use during your workouts. That said, you can still get a lot out of the app without a smartwatch.

The routines and exercises themselves are customized to your fitness experience, level, needs, and goals, making the app very user-friendly.

Plus, being able to communicate with your coach between workouts makes Future more personalized, helping to eliminate confusion and incorrect exercise execution, while promoting program adherence. We also like the video demonstrations, excellent cueing, and exercise instructions.

In fact, Renee Zernicke recommends that people engage with their coach as much as possible. “Future coaches come from pro and college sports, Olympics, and other high-profile organizations, so they are legit experts in the fitness and wellness industry,” she says. Her advice is to utilize their knowledge, ask questions, lean on them for advice for ways to correctly do workout maneuvers, and don’t be afraid to give them regular feedback, especially if you think a fitness program they curated for you is or isn’t working.

Who Is Future Best For?

Future is best for people wanting personalized training, ongoing support, and regular access to a coach. We think this platform is ideal for anyone wanting a more in-depth experience who can budget for the $199 fee each month and take advantage of all that it offers.

It’s also ideal for people who travel or have unpredictable schedules but want to maintain their fitness regimen with their coach.

Although coaches can design workouts without equipment, Future is a better fit if you have access to a gym or a variety of equipment at home like dumbbells, exercise bands, and kettlebells.

Because your coach can only provide recommendations and feedback after you send a video,  Future is also better suited for people who do not need or want instruction or supervision during their workouts.

This app is not class-based, so it may not be the right fit if you want live and on-demand cardio, stretching, and strength training classes led by instructors. It also requires self-direction and problem-solving if a move is not working.

If you need a more hands-on approach or have certain health or medical needs that require supervision while working out, this app may not be right for you.

One Future user says, “One of the best training apps I’ve used. Couple that with an actual person (shoutout to Garrett Baker) who literally works one and one with you to adjust the plan and answer any questions, is awesome. The videos, the tech, the trainer, all works seamless and I was impressed from day one. Good job to the engineers, product owners, and all involved in building out a great experience.”

Why Everyone is OBSESSED With the Future App

What to Consider When Choosing a Fitness App?

Finding a fitness app that fits your budget, needs, goals, and resources may take some trial and error, but doing the research and trying out a few different apps is worth it.

Moreover, having a list of things to consider when choosing a fitness app can help make the process go smoother. With that in mind, here are some areas to keep in mind as you search online for a workout app.

  • App type: Workout apps fall into a few different categories. Personal trainer apps like Future are more expensive and feature a customized routine with access to a coach. This is very different from other fitness apps like Peloton or iFit that use a class-based approach to deliver instructor-led classes and routines. Additionally, platforms like Fitbod use AI-generated tools to design routines for use at home and in the gym, adding another style of app to consider.
  • Subscription fees: Most class-based and routine-based fitness apps cost between $9.99 and $29.99 per month, while others are free. Many offer a lower price point if you pre-pay per quarter or annually. Apps like Future, which cost $199 per month, are much more expensive because they offer a customized experience with ongoing coaching support. Knowing what you want out of a fitness app will help when comparing monthly fees.
  • Free version or trial period: Many workout apps offer a trial period ranging from seven to 30 days. This allows potential users to try the platform risk-free before fully committing. Other apps, like Future, have a product guarantee for the first month. In other words, if you’re not completely satisfied after the first month, they will refund your subscription fee. This is different from a trial though because it requires payment and a follow-up to request a refund.
  • Compatible devices: Most popular fitness apps are compatible with both iOS and Android devices. That said, some only work with iOS. Additionally, some workout apps rely on access to a smartwatch like an Apple Watch to maximize the experience.
  • Equipment requirements: The best routine and class-based workout apps offer both bodyweight-only and equipment options for performing exercises. If you prefer routines with equipment, look for apps that feature workouts using resistance equipment like dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells, resistance bands, medicine balls, and exercise balls. You’ll also want to consider where you’ll be exercising. If you have access to a gym, equipment should not be an issue, but if you’ll be performing the majority of your workouts at home, make sure the platform you choose can meet your needs.
  • Exercise demonstrations and instructions: Written and video instructions that are clear, concise, and easy to follow are essential when using a self-directed workout app or personal training platform. Ideally, the app you choose will have both written steps and video demonstrations.
  • Access to coach or trainer: Workout apps like Future are designed around personalized coaching, which is why you pay a higher monthly fee. That said, not every platform offers the same type of access, so you’ll want to ask about the number of times you can talk with your coach and how you will communicate (phone, messages, FaceTime).

The Bottom Line

The Future app is a comprehensive training platform featuring customized workouts, expert trainers, personalized support, and daily motivation. Future uses iOS or Android-supported devices to deliver routines and connect users with a coach.

Overall, Future is an excellent choice for anyone looking for more accountability, a human connection to a coach, and custom-made training programs with personalized audio coaching.

We really like that the Future app revolves around your schedule, goals, equipment, experience level, and personal preferences. We also appreciate the regular access to a coach for support, motivation, encouragement, and feedback.

A Future membership costs $199 per month and includes full access to your coach and unlimited workouts customized each month. You can pause your membership for one, two, or three months and reserve a spot with your coach, without being charged until you return.

Although you’ll receive personalized training from a certified coach we recommend talking with your doctor or another healthcare provider before signing up for the Future app.
